Expanded Dance WHAT?! talk for As We Are Away Festival, the Wonder Inn, Manchester, 2016
As We Are Away Festival was founded by Nous magazine, a Manchester based publication dedicated to conversations around mental illness. Their aim is to promote open-mindedness in society and help remove the prejudice following people affected. LEGROOM approached the theme of the recent magazine issue ‘borders, gaps, bridges’ with an acknowledgement of the gaps and borderlines in understanding between art and dance alongside what it means to ‘dance’ and ‘move.’

LEGROOM approached the theme of the recent magazine issue ‘borders, gaps, bridges’ with an acknowledgement of the gaps and borderlines in understanding between art and dance alongside what it means to ‘dance’ and ‘move.’
Our presentation explored ‘expanded dance’ and presented a ‘beginners’ guide to movement, introducing the audience to seminal movement artists working in multi-disciplinary practices across dance, video and visual arts, such as Yvonne Rainer (image above right) and Marten Spangberg whose work extended the field of dance allowing it to be perceived differently thorough its altered duration, space and context. We invited the audience to reflect on performed movements in comparison to those apparent in everyday environments, their own performances, whether running for the bus or dancing in the shower. We then asked 3 questions as part of our ongoing research into public perception of movement:
1. What is stopping you from creating art right now?
2. What is your fantasy when alone in an exhibition space?
3. When was the last time you danced?
This presentation allowed LEGROOM to develop a framework around the communication of conceptual ideas within dance to the public whilst also engaging a new audience.
