ALMOST CREDIBLE MUSIC: MACHINE MUSIC - Tuesday 14th November
Almost Credible Music presents a programme of ambitious music and theatre in LEGROOM, featuring bleeping machines, live performance and spoken text. The program centres on the first instalment of Michael Cutting’s new work of music theatre for two performers of analogue devices, live visuals and narrator, to be presented in full in 2018. Completing the night is the beautifully melancholic Religious Music by Berlin-based artist Joe Snape and a specially devised new solo set by Verona's very own Zeno Baldi.
The event opened with 'listening, then talking #3' facilitated by Ecka Mordecai.
Part of The New Music North West Festival.

LISTENING, THEN TALKING #3 - Tiber Balm by Annea Lockwood - Hosted by Ecka Mordecai
is an opportunity to listen to a sound work, then discuss it with a group. It is an exploration of what sound art is, or might be.
a unique opportunity to:
turn up
listen to a recorded sound work*
discuss it within a group
*a work relating to 'sound art' that is not necessarily committed to or passionate about John Cage's hegemonic mutterings bent into a mobius strip.
Ecka Mordecai is a performance/sound artist specialising in cello, composition/improvisation and listening.

She studied sound art at BA and MA level and now works in the cracks between the art and music industries.

SOLO SET - Zeno Baldi
Zeno Baldi braught a brand new solo set of pedals, sequencers and percussive synths straight from Italy (Verona). Semi-controlled / semi-improvised, Baldi explores a simple loop of guitar harmonics, magnifying it live into unpredictable and unexpected grooves and textures. Video of his set *here*
Zeno Baldi creates works for acoustic instruments and various kind of electronic devices. Active as composer, performer and sound designer for mixed media, his music has been presented at Festivals such as London Ear Festival, Rondò (Milan), Firenze suona contemporanea, MATA (New York), and in venues like the Royaumont Abbey, Le Centquatre (Paris), Teatro Ristori (Verona), Teatro La Fenice (Venice). Collaborations with soloists such as Marco Fusi, Heather Roche, Manu Mayr a.o., Ensembles (Divertimento, Flame, Linea, Zeitfluss, Intercontemporain, Ex Novo a.o.) and Orchestras (OPV, Teatro la Fenice). Upcoming projects include a new piece for Quartetto Maurice commissioned by Associazione De Sono, a new ensemble piece commissioned by Divertimento Ensemble and Opus XXI to be premiered within the 2018 Concert Season of Società del Quartetto di Milano, and the release of a monographic studio record for Stradivarius Label, as closing chapter of the “composer in residence” program at Rondò 2017 (Divertimento Ensemble).

MACHINE MUSIC - Michael Cutting
Live performers - Michael Cutting & Joe Snape
A dark, surrealist tale about two dishevelled operators of an unending and seemingly unnecessary task, we follow their journey as one becomes increasingly frustrated and seeks to overcome his fate. In development for a couple of years, this performance will be the first preview of what will become a full-length multimedia theatre work, planned to be premiered by Almost Credible Music in 2018.
Michael Cutting makes music with acoustic instruments and analogue devices. His recent work derives from experiments with reel-to-reel tape machines, characterised by warped loops, lo-fi noise and an emphasis on the theatricality of performance. Michael's output ranges from electronic releases to multimedia performances, works for symphony orchestra to semi-improvised live sets, and has been presented in HCMF (UK), Klangspuren (Austria), AHEAD Festival (Lithuania) Manifeste Academy (Paris), and in venues from the Royal Festival Hall to Cafe Oto, Royaumont Abbey to Rotherhithe Tunnel Shaft. His music has been broadcast on BBC Radio 3, Lake Radio (Denmark), LRT Radijas (Lithunia) and is released on the NMC and Ono record labels.

RELIGIOUS MUSIC - Joe Snape
The first outlines of the follow-up to 2015’s Tired Music (Kesh), Religious Music is based on an archive of church organ recordings made at the Moabit Refo-Kirche with composer and arranger Will Gardner (London). Imperfectly reproduced by sets of simple oscillators, complex sounds are stripped of all but their most elemental acoustic character. Like a levelled snowfield or a smoothed pebble, the plane surfaces of these sounds speak to bigger things: of bibles, altars, and light cast across empty halls.
Joe Snape (1989) mixes conventional and homemade instruments with light and text to make unusual and moving performances. His work – featured in The Guardian and described by Fluid Radio as ‘joyous and beautiful’ – has been presented at venues like Café Oto (London), Wonder Site (Tokyo), Mayhem (Copenhagen), Melkweg (Amsterdam), Arraymusic (Toronto), and The Kitchen (NYC). His work has appeared on BBC 6 Music, Resonance FM and NTS Radio, and is published by the Slip, Kesh and Ono imprints.
